WEATHER CONDITIONS

Season phenology: late

Weather conditions:

Spring was extremaly cold and late, with ice-floating on 26 June only at Chukochiya R, while before this date air temperature did not exceed +3^C. Ice-melt did not start on many of watershed lakes at this time. Ice jams on the river resulted in flooding of substantial fraction of valley area and loss of some clutches of ducks, waders and swans.

BIOTIC CONDITIONS

Rodents abundance evaluation:

average

Breeding conditions:

Arctic Foxes successfully bred, and a single den out of 5 observed was deserted with monthly pups. Each of 4 found nests of Rough-legged Buzzards contained chicks, that had hatched from 25-30 June. Snowy Owls were rare and did not breed.
Among waders Little Stints, Pectoral Sandpipers and phalaropes were common and most likely successful breeders. A single found nest of Grey Plover and one of Temmink's Stint were depredated during laying. Ross's Gulls did not breed. Geese breeding was successful: eggs hatched on 30 June in one of 3 found nests of Bean Goose. Two of 6 found nests of Bewick's Swan were flooded.

Rodent dynamics:

Lemming numbers were decreasing after subdued peak of 1995, and 6 animals were caught per 100 trap/days.
